Approximately 30 years ago, Red Fox was a small club organised by Mark Wilson and Tony Mickleburgh and Oakwood Bowman was a small Archery Club based at Felixstowe Ferry run by Roy Proctor and Tim Mullett.
The two clubs regularly shot together and then merged back in 1992 and run by Roy Proctor, the club was then relocated to the present Oakwood Bowmen site. Roy's aim was to ensure a group of like minded archers could all shoot together in superb surroundings with splendid banter making for a good day out for everyone involved.
The club has since grown and now boasting sixty members and a wonderful collection of 3D Big game targets. With much the same ethos, Oakwood Bowmen club members are known for their welcoming manner to guests and other members alike.
Bob Piper became the second Chairman of Oakwood Bowmen. During his time as Chairman along with the new Committee members, they starting bringing in the changes in keeping with the N.F.A.S, Forestry Commission and Insurance Regulations. Bob Piper also re wrote a new Constitution and By Laws for the rising membership.
The present Chairman Mel Horne was first introduced to Archery by Roy Proctor back in 1996. Having been Membership Secretary and General Secretary in prior years. Mel has since introduced the Taster Days to Oakwood Bowmen which has incorporated the purchase of new equipment for prospective members, secured a permanent catering team who do an excellent job in keeping our guests and members bellies happy. So much so, a new menu board has had to be purchased to list all the food they do.
Oakwood Bowmen is committed to improving the clubs access and usability for archers with disabilities, archery is for everyone and we all deserve to be able to do what makes us happy.
Due to the excellent administration and organisation at Oakwood Bowmen, the Forestry Commission now use Oakwood Bowmen as a benchmark for all other clubs to follow who lease Forestry Commission land.
